Happy Hosting, Happy New Year - Rob Ellen
Some fine bar-band blues from Sacramento, California on this album. Vocalist and rhythm guitarist Val sets the scene right from the off with the lovely swinging shuffle of ‘High Time To Go’, an original as are all twelve tracks here. Val writes some fine blues numbers, and she is backed by a cracking little band comprising her husband John Ellis on bass, Frankie Soul on lead guitar and Paul Farman on drums, plus several guests making significant contributions. The title track has a fine jazzy feel, an approach that also crops up on ‘You Better Stop’, and whilst others have a heavier blues feel (try ‘Whether Blues’ or the grinding ‘Bad Luck & The Blues’ for good examples), ‘What Happens After Midnight (Nothin’ Good)’ hits a strong groove and ‘Please Don’t Go Away Mad’ has an attractive pop-soul feel with a strong country tinge. All in all, this CD is well worth the effort to track it down..
