Canadian trio, The Lonesome Ace Stringband's passion for old-time traditional music is underlined, beautifully on this wonderful selection of primarily new compositions. Each member contributes at least two tracks, and with their fine work on banjo, guitar (Chris Coole), bass (Max Heineman) and fiddle (John Showman) the boys obtain a balance not always obtained, by acts looking at traditional music.
Among the covers you have Mississippi John Hurt’s “Let The Mermaids Flirt With Me”, the sound of rattling banjo and incisive fiddle plus rock solid upright bass (coupled with Showman’s lead vocals ) give the song a different spin. Showman is also lead vocalist on “Pretty Boy Floyd” (the song is inspired by John Steinbeck and Wood Guthrie’s account of the famed bank robber, and the times he lived). He also does a unique version of classic western tune “The Wayward Wind“. As for Heineman, he contributes story-ballad “O’Grady Road”, and with a light and breezy fiddle, dancing on top of banjo “Civil Wars". What with the stellar picking, lead vocals and harmonies; plus wanderlust feel they create it is arguable their finest effort.
More traditional sounding, if there is such a thing Coole and the boys perform a stripped-down, rustic sounding harmony vocal juggled “Life’s Treasure”, and there are others too! One that must not got unmentioned, and that is the instrumental “Sweetberry Wine”, and it has for company the superb visual driven “Never Again” (Darrin Jacquard) , and with the boys working up a storm Showman delivers trad piece “Catlettsburg”. I can imagine, live, the boys will lift the levels even higher. I for one can’t wait to see them!
