The Sage Theatre in Gateshead is the Northeast's offering to new centuary iconic architecture, and happily is also a music venue. Fitting then it services one of the most music sensitive and musically active parts of the country. The Summertyne Americana Festival mirrors and showcases what has always been a Tyneside trait, a love of American Roots music. Think The Animals, Lindisfarne, Mark Knofler, Martin Stephenson, even Jimmy Nail, then seek out The Hotlicks Cookies, Big Vern and The Shooters, Johnny Dickenson, Ray Stubbs (The Blues Man not the sports man off the telly) and you've just rippled the surface of what is a deep well-pool of talent dedicated to and in love with American Music in all its forms, supported by a wave of audience appreciation, which has sustained possible Britain's most happening roots club, The Jumpin Hot Club for nearly 30 years as well as a plethora of pub, folk club and now House Concerts venues, around the North East .
From July 22nd through to the 25th The Sage Gateshead in conjunction with the ‘Jumpin’ Hot Club’ presented four days of the very best. Including a Broadway Musicals with the Northern Sinfonia plus, workshops for children and adults, exhibitions and film screenings even a boat trips to the mouth of the Tyne accompanied by John Miller and his Country Casuals .
Headliners appearing were Solomon Burke, Rosanne Cash Elizabeth Cook and Bob Dylan’s son Jakob Dylan with his band Three Legs .
There are a whole host of other artists appearing on the outdoor ‘Jumping Hot Club’ stage, including The Medicine Shows contribution, East Nashville Revue, as well as The Hi & Lo, Otis Gibbs, The Toy Hearts ,The Handsome Family, The Holmes Brothers, Rita Hoskins, The Grass Mountain Hobos, Sarah Savoy and the Francadians Paul Burch, The Bikini Beach Band and the Quebe Sisters
With concert appearances in a range of indoor venues from Howe Gelb and a Band of Gypsies, Kristin Hersh, Tim Eriksen, Eliza Carthy, Phantom Limb, Jon Cleary and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Dayna Kurtz and Rachel Harrington.
Blessed with all that music, we were further blessed by the weather

"In an intimate evening of songs and stories about his days as a Staff Writer with The Beatles Publishing Co. Apple, Legendary Singer-Songwriter Benny Gallagher will perform all of the hits he penned for McGuinness Flint and Gallagher & Lyle - songs that have since been recorded by:
Art Garfunkel, Bryan Ferry, Colin Blunstone, Donavon Frankenreiter, Don Williams, Elkie Brooks, Fairport Convention, Garth Brooks (Concert in Central Park), Judith Durham, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Mary Hopkin, Phil Everly, Ricky Nelson, Ringo Starr, Rita Coolidge, Status Quo, Simon and Garfunkel (Concert in Central Park), The Fureys, and Lemon Jelly to name but a few..... along with some great new songs from his latest Album ‘At The Edge of the Wave’
For 40 years and more, Benny Gallagher has been writing, composing, arranging and performing timeless classics. Small wonder then that, with Graham Lyle, he was one of the first songwriters to be signed by Apple Publishing. Success as an artist quickly followed when the legendary McGuinness Flint stormed the charts with When I'm Dead And Gone and Malt and Barley Blues.
Then came seven more albums and world tours with the majestic Gallagher & Lyle - by which time Benny’s reputation was cemented as one of the UK’s foremost songwriters of his generation.
