Happy Hosting, Happy New Year - Rob Ellen
This American singer/ songwriter currently lives in Suffolk in the east of England, and he follows up his very well-received 2017 five track CD EP release Days Like These with this rather nice ten song album. Philip cites his early influences as Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp, Neil Young, Jim Croce and Cat Stevens – those are not in the order he lists them, but they are in the order they struck me as I listened to the CD. With arrangements big and small behind his own strong but warm vocals and guitar work, backed by combinations of guitars, keyboards, bass and drums, plus the occasional violin and the excellent pedal steel playing of David Phillips, these honest, reflective and ultimately celebratory songs certainly leave their mark – and do be sure to let the CD play right through to the end.
