Happy Hosting, Happy New Year - Rob Ellen
This is a four piece band out of Louisville, Kentucky, with vocalist Laurie Jane Duggins fronting a tight little band consisting of her husband Cort Duggins on guitar, piano and lap steel guitar, Jason Embry on upright bass, and Scott Dugdale on a vintage sounding drum-kit (take a listen to ‘What’s A Girl To Do’) . They have a nicely eclectic but always blues-based approach, ranging from the fine, jazzy, classic late 40s/ early 50s female blues sound of ‘It’s Been A Long Time’ (wonderful vocal by Laurie) and the country tinged ‘Couldn’t Cry Alone’ to the two rockabilly inflected and very bluesy tracks, the opening ‘Wait So Long’ and the raucous closing ‘Not With You’ plus a very nice reworking of Howling Wolf’s ‘Howlin’ For My Darlin’. Alongside these are several excellent blues performances and a couple of early 60s rhythm and blues numbers with slight touches of Sam Cooke and a hint of a pop feel, with the end result being an unpretentious and extremely entertaining release.
