Originally from Chicago but now based in Nashville, singer and guitarist Lauren opens this set with ‘Make A Mistake’, a roots rock number that hints at The Rolling Stones and southern rock, though with a soulful, gutsy vocal that recalls Etta James and Janis Joplin. The title track rides a bluesy guitar riff and has a similarly explosive vocal, whilst ‘Scream’ is appropriately tough before the mellow, slightly country-tinged ‘On Her Own’ eases proceedings down; it is followed by the largely minimalist rock/ soul ballad ‘Sing’ where her voice really takes flight. The final track of this EP, ‘What If’ is what would have been called “country-rock” a while back. Lauren has opened for the likes of Beth Hart, Walter Trout and Samantha Fish, and it is easy to understand why her music would be pleasing to followers of these bluesy performers; but on this evidence her appeal goes way beyond strictly blues lovers.
