JIM REEVES —THE HIT LIST..and then some 1953-1962 (Jasmine Records) 2cds

Here we have a bumper section if ever there was! Sixty-four songs, and with Gentleman Jim at the top of his game the listener, both old and new fans of one of country music’s true legends have much to savour. Reeves, the man with the velvet voice may not have the persona of a Hank Williams Snr, Waylon Jennings or Johnny Cash but boy, didn't Reeves have a voice and a half.

Looking through the list of songs, and songwriters (Harlan Howard, Johnny Bond, Cindy Walker, Don Robertson, Leon Payne, Alex Zanetis, Carl Belew, John (Johnny) Russell, Mitchell Torok, Boudleaux Bryant, Roger Miller, Joe & Audrey Allison, Jimmie Rodgers, Danny Dill, Hank Cochran and Bob Montgomery…) I was unable to hold back an urge to sample the music. To hear once again such treasures as “The Blizzard”, “In A Mansion Stands My Love”, “Blue Side Of Lonesome”, “When Two Worlds Collide” and with those beautiful strings and warm harmonies arguably his greatest performance, vocally “Welcome To My World”. That is not to forget his version of “I Fall To Pieces”, “Yonder Comes A Sucker” and more of those stop you in your tracks vocal efforts in “Am I Losing You” and “Four Walls” and there’s more!

For good measure you have such fun songs as “A Railroad Bum”, “Bimbo” (a song he supposedly loathed) and with a pleasing lilt to it, his wife Mary Reeves Davis’ gospel piece “This World Is Not My Home” and with a near Rhumba beat “I’m Gonna Change Everything” and the ever popular “Mexican Joe” and of the three duets, sad-eyed “The Mother Of A Honky Tonk Girl”. More often than not when you hear or read of an album containing rarely heard songs or alternate recordings the result more often than not at best average, not so is the case here. For those lesser heard, overlooked cuts are the business.
