This is the second album from gruff-voiced singer/ songwriter/ guitarist and bandleader Jim and his singing partner Jeri “Truth Jones” Goldenhar. Jim is from Santa Clarita, California – listen to the lyrics of the title track – and has been playing around the Los Angeles area for over 30 years. The two tend to alternate lead vocals, though the vintage soul styled closer is a true duet. Both Jim and Jeri are soulful singers, supporting each other well and tackling an excellent programme of original, often catchy, positive blues with the occasional detour into a country-rock influenced style, as on the fade of ’Memphis’ (which brought Stephen Stills’ Manassas to mind). Seemingly more typical though are tough items like the grinding ‘You Know Me Too Well’ (wonderful vocal by Jeri), the straight-ish shuffle of ‘Big Hearted Woman’, the Latin-flavoured blues of ‘Crazy Little Woman’, the boogie-based shuffle of ‘Half Past Ten’ or the Stax-tinged country soul of ‘I Love What I Got’. Nicely varied, especially for a contemporary blues set, and well worth investigating. If you are still unsure about the quality – well, Theresa James is on backing vocals…
