Originally from Virginia, guitarist, singer, and bandleader J.J. has a strongly rocking approach on this album; after a brief guitar interlude, he launches into the ferocious, Chuck Berry inspired ‘Long Way From Home’ and mines a blues furrow with the likes of ‘Wang Dang Doodle’, the swampy groove of ‘Can’t Get Along With You’ and cools down with the slow ‘Outskirts Of Town’, with its late hours ambiance. The instrumental ‘Stinky Twinky’ comes in two versions, the first of which has a guest appearance by 90 years old sax blasting legend Big Jay McNeely; the other is an energetic trio performance. ‘Things I Need’ is a zany, western swing influenced item and the lyrics are not for airplay, Dr. Todd’s ‘That Ain’t Me’ is a country ballad and ‘What Do I Tell My Heart’ is seven and a half minutes of country swing. I’m not too sure about the “bonus track” ‘Three Toed Midget’, a little too much of a novelty for my taste, but other than that, this CD is certainly well worth a listen.
