I SEE HAWKS IN LA: Live And Never Learn CD review and UK Dates

I SEE HAWKS IN LA

Live And Never Learn

(WESTERN SEEDS RECORD COMPANY)

Having had the misfortune to release their debut album on 9/11, I See Hawks In LA, have suffered further personal grief more recently, and this is the first band album for five years. These struggles have had a positive artistic effect, though, with several cuts influenced by the bitter-sweetness in taking strength from adversity.

Impressive in their country simplicity, ‘Ballad For The Trees’ and the title track (the latter deliciously spiced by guest Dave Zirbel’s pedal steel guitar) set the tone, but the air crackles with energy when Rob Waller, Paul Lacques, Paul Marshall and Victoria Jacobs flex their rock n roll muscles on ‘The Last Man In Tujunga’ and the swampy ‘King Of The Rosemead Boogie’.

Even more contrasting is when drummer Jacobs steps out front to lead her own ‘Spinning’, its wistful vocal, her bandmates’ harmonies and a spacey, heavily-tremoloed guitar harking back fifty years to the psychedelic folk-rock sounds of California.

Quirkier still, but indicative of the band’s wide palette is the doo-wop soul of ‘My Parka Saved Me’, a part-spoken, part harmonised true life tale of an accident Jacobs suffered in her teens.
