Happy Hosting, Happy New Year - Rob Ellen
Out of Kansas City, Grand Marquis open this CD with the Stax flavoured soul of ‘Another Lover’ and follow it up with the jazz flavoured title track, complete with a vintage Duke Ellington-ish “jungle” trumpet sound and a swinging vocal by Bryan Redmond. ‘I’m On Fire’ boasts good horn work again over a grooving arrangement, and another strong but controlled vocal, before ‘Night Shift’ heads down to “The Land Of Dreams” and then the band update the New Orleans sound by a few decades to come up with a funky instrumental outing, ‘It Don’t Matter’. ‘Ain’t No Spark’ is a cool, jazzy call-and-response shuffle, and ‘Bad Seed’ is another fine shuffle, again with excellent horn work, before the set closes out with two covers: reggae singer Jimmy Cliff’s ‘Many Rivers To Cross’ becomes a mighty southern soul tune, and the traditional ‘Down By the Riverside’ ends this admirable release with the Crescent City second line sound – nice!
