Cedaredge, Colorado based singer-songwriter David Starr is most articulate and meticulous in the way he fashions his songs, five of the six songs on this EP are his own work.
Starr was raised in Northwest Arkansas and now owns a thriving guitar store in Cedaredge, and he splits his time between the store and performing. Following his tour of Southern California he will be touring the UK during the second half of May. Recorded in Nashville and produced by John Oates Starr combines contemporary singer-songwriter virtues with country based fare. It is well worth noting the players on the record. For apart from his own electric and acoustic guitar work it has the acoustic guitar, harmony vocals of Oates; and Dan Dugmore on lap steel, pedal steel guitar and mandolin; Greg Morrow, drums; Steve Mackey on bass, Nat Smith on cello and Tom Bukovac, electric guitars. One could want for a better set of players, and the do one another proud!
He holds the best song till last, a brilliant story-ballad “Dancing With My Pride”. Co-written with his friend Bob Liepman and inspired by a book by his grandfather, Fred Starr it contains timeless qualities. He opens the recording with a complex piece about women “Edge Of The World” (it is one of those songs that becomes better and stronger with ever play, nice pedal steel too), and with the title-track next up “The Head And Heart” Starr’s music is calming, and his vocals nothing less than superb as each lyric is handled with great care. “California Dreamin’ the old Mamas And Papas hit gains an unexpected inclusion, and with Oates in tow he does the song proud. Performing it without the usual big harmony vocal input. It works too. The innovative instrumentation clinches it. “Waiting In the Dark” (a song about drug addiction) and the powerful “I’ve Come For You” has Starr lay his heart on the line. Both are admirable, and beautifully worked as Starr’s worth as a songwriter is underlined.‘I just like connecting and that's what I hope to do with this music'.
