Happy Hosting, Happy New Year - Rob Ellen
Oh boy, what a pleasant sound. Norwegian trio Darling West have two previous albums out, last years Vinyl And A Heartache won them a Norwegian Grammy.
While I Was Asleep was written across boundaries, during their travels across Europe and America, and as is the case of their beautiful opener “After My Time” in their Oslo flat.
Darling West are; Mari Sandvaer Kreken (lead, backing vocals, guitars, mandolin, harmonica), Tor Egil Kreken (lead, backing vocals, Fender VI, banjo, electric, acoustic guitar, Fender VI, banjo) and Kjetil Steensnaes (backing vocals, acoustic, 6-12 string electric, pedal steel guitar, mando and have additional support in the form of additional harmony vocals, piano, Wurlitzer, percussion, strings and mellotron on selected tracks.
Highlights include the aforementioned opener 'After My Time" plus “While I Was Asleep”, “Traveller” (a story about someone with a restless soul, who made some choices in the past and is still haunted by them’) seamless harmonies, fluent instrumental work. Mari’s lead vocals are a prime factor as she eases, beautifully, through one credible track after another. Among which there's the tender, gently chugging heart-tugging song about heartache "Loneliness",
One thing is for sure, they need not fear having to walk in the shadow of any act performing harmony driven Americana; regardless where the other act may hail. Since the playing, it too is impressive.
