DALE WATSON- CALL ME LUCKY (Red House / Ameripolitan Records)

http://www.redhouserecords.com

http://www.dalewatson.com

Country music honky tonk traditionalist Dale Watson, and his band The Lone Stars never fail to perform anything less than 110% pure country. As usual the material is awash in a fresh sounding take of the music he was reared on. Music of the likes of Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, George Jones, and the trucking scene (and the Bakersfield Sound in general) plus Hank Williams.

His Cash influences are never far away. The best underlined on the fan inspired The Dumb Song and story ballad about  Cash and his wife June Carter Cash, Johnny & June (both of which feature Cash’s famed drummer, W.S Holland). The latter was written by rockabilly gal, Celina Lee and it also features her fine singing voice as they combine duet fashion. Watson’s ability to tell all the story in a short space is one of his strongest attributes. He opens the door, walks round the room, dusts off his shoes so the speak in double quick time as he leaves doesn’t tell the entire story for the playing of him and his band, plus horns is likewise first class! You only need to have a quick listen to the likes of the above, and one about Lubbock farmer and truck driver, David Buxkemper and with superb lead guitar Restless. The list goes on, and with well over twenty years of recording behind him Watson makes it all sound so easy. Both the writing of the songs and in the (honky took) groove playing.

Band members Don Pawlak on pedal steel, Mike Bernal on drums, Chris Crepps on bass plus Watson (lead electric guitar and vocals) ensure the listener is entertained throughout. Other tracks to the above worthy of a special listen include the brass enhanced Tupelo Mississippi & A ‘57 Fairlane and sprightly Who Needs, This Man plus, with an early Sun Records Johnny Cash boom-chicks-boom feel Run Away. As for Mama’s Smile Watson is found in reflective mood, and on splashing some wit over his work You We’re Supposed To Feel This Good isn’t to be ignored. Recorded at Sam Phillips recording Studio in Memphis (his new part time abode; Watson has sold his interest in the bar world in Austin, Texas and moved on) Call Me Lucky signals another chapter in Watson’s career.
