welcome to Flyinshoes Review americana webzine

Portland Oregon has been referred to as the most environmentally friendly city in the United States, so no surprise the sons and daughters of Portland, are sallying forth with a new wave of thoughtful and thought provoking indie music, that is capturing hearts and minds across the roots music scene around the world.
Very much in the vanguard are Celilo www.myspace.com/celilo (also watch out for mention of Loch Lomond in such dispatches) with this release "Bending Mirrors" having the potencial to be a scene defining classic. Think sun soaked languid moody genre bending Wilco at their best and your in the right territory to appreciate what Celilo are bringing to the table, soundscapes as dramatic as Oregon's landscape and lyricism with a street wise perception worthy of anything that has come out of more musicaly fashionable near neighbours Seattle in many a long year.

Sloan Martin - writes the songs, guitars and even melotron, Damon Dunning - brings impeccable tasteful finger licking guitar doubles on bass, David Pullman keys conjures up the star spangle high lonesome dessert soundscapes, ably supported in the task by Tucker Jackson, on pedal Steal, and the fusion of myriad styles in big part from an easy conflation of Adam East bass (and other guitars with Damon) & Kipp Crawford Drums. This is a real band of equals! one suspects.

Celilo the name refers to a series of cascades and waterfalls on the Columbia River, Celilo's the music has that cascading quality too, with wave after wave of moody roots-pop washing over the harminicaly drenched listener. The name also refers to the native settlements and trading villages that existed in Oregon for 15,000 years. Celilo was the name of oldest continuously inhabited community on the North American continent until 1957, when the falls and nearby settlements were submerged by the construction of The Dalles Dam.

Fare play to Martin Sloan and crew this album explores human themes as long lived as any human settlement and evokes, as with all of life, joy and sadness in equal measure . I think these guys know what they are doing, and advice you to make an effort to find out too.
