When you go to see a solo artist do they have a backing band? Do you think they’re great? Well, now go to one of their sets when it is just them and an acoustic guitar and you will see that they are amazing.
Anna Coogan had the audience’s utmost attention when she walked on stage at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow.
Opening her set with “Never make her wait” you knew that the rest of her set was going to live up to your expectations and then some.
Anna kept with her Americano sound through “Crooked Sea”. Although gradually you noticed that she doesn’t just stick to the one genre and instead mixes her genres, ranging from country, to folk storytelling and Celtic. Anna certainly does know how to make and own her sound; it is obvious that she has the ‘Seattle Sound’, showing similarities with Jesse Sykes.
With the audience captivated she introduced “Indian son” which held nothing but beautiful lyrics that matched a beautiful voice.
Behind every song Anna had a story to tell, “Rise Above” was one of those wonderful storytelling songs. One member of the audience said ‘It was one of my favourite songs of the night.
“Halfway Gone” was the next story to be told. It was a song she wrote about her cousin who came to Glasgow and who fell in love with the city. Unfortunately they passed away while they lived here and Anna dedicated this song to them. The audience managed to somehow find this story funny, showing no respect whatsoever. However, the song was touching from the very first chord, probably causing the ones that laughed to realise their mistake.
As the set was coming to an end a very enthusiastic audience member shouted out a song request, and instead of turning down the request and playing the song she had originally intended on performing she very kindly obliged. “So long, Summertime” was the song choice of the audience member and it certainly finished Anna’s set on a high.
At the end the audience gave Anna the applause and cheers that she deserved. She truly is a remarkable person and even if you don’t meet her you know that she would probably be the nicest person you would ever meet.
