Happy Hosting, Happy New Year - Rob Ellen
Romanian singer and guitarist AG Weinberger, “The Transylvanian Guitar Man”, has here a fairly straight blues set, though that description is rather qualified given that many of the blues performers in countries formerly behind the Iron Curtain have tended to be rather more experimental, and the blues meets jazz and film soundtrack sound of the title track certainly has more than a hint of this approach. AG knows the blues however – try the opening track, a cover of the fine Howling Wolf/ Koko Taylor Chicago standard ‘Wang Dang Doodle’, which does contain hints of a jazzier approach, and the album’s other cover song is an excellent rendition of the more obscure Detroit bluesman Johnnie Bassett’s ‘Cadillac Blues`. He has also enlisted the former Muddy Waters’ guitarist Bob Margolin to supply slide guitar on ‘The Fool’s Lucky Day’. Other elements creep in again though, as often happens with contemporary blues – Just One Minute’ is a delicate country ballad and Cseke Gábor’s piano solo on the hip ‘Shoot’ is pure jazz. #Caroline’ is a piece of smooth pop and the closer, ‘I Am The Water’ is an intimate piano and vocal ballad with jazz overtones. Overall an intriguing release.
