ADAM CARROLL - WALKED IN THEM SHOES

http://www.adamcarroll.com

ALBUM OF THE MONTH

Texas singer-songwriter Adam Carroll is someone, until this record I wasn’t too familiar with. But from the off a feeling that I have been missing out, badly was established. And I mean badly, for here is a wonderful talent. Walked In Them Shoes is his eighth record since he started recording in 1998 (South Of Town). I can hear traces of Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and James McMurtry in his writing style, and with Lloyd Maines his producer the material could not be in better hands.

WMusician wise, it vies towards minimal as the musicians present are only Carroll on acoustic guitar, harmonica, harmonium and keyboards and Maines on pedal steel, slide and rhythm guitar. But make no mistake, like in all areas everything is more than adequately covered. Well worked melodies and all you would expect from those I would readily bracket him alongside (see above). You could also throw in Butch Hancock and Slaid Cleaves. He is in their league when it comes to telling a story!

Carroll wrote most of the ten tracks himself; except when he called on Dustin Welch and Halleyanne Welch for The Last Word, Michael O’Connor and Chris Carroll (his wife, and with whom he has a duo record Good Farmer planned for later in the year) Cresent City Of Angels, and fellow singer-songwriter recording artist Paul Cauthen for title-track Walked In Them Shoes. Among the tracks I was immediately impressed with, and couldn’t wait to hear again you have the sublime Iris And The Lonesome Stranger and Storms as among other things he speaks on the latter of how he can make a million dollars but can’t outrun the storm. And how he is hanging in there. On the equally strong Crescent City Angels the song speaks of him been king of New Orleans one moment and down at heel the next, and how every good time comes to an end. Carroll enjoys reflecting on life, and the life changing situations people from time to time stumble across. His lyrics are sharp, descriptive, and like with Guy Clark his stories are simply told. Backed by a melody to suit his songs are of the kind that stick.

Going back to arguably his best work, Iris And The Lonesome Stranger is an incredible gem! On the song he speaks of an old lady and her best friend Irish Rose (that she kept hidden in her shopping cart; a bottle of the hard stuff). Hugely evocative, it captives from the word go. His songs are like that, they draw the listener in close and in little or no time they become like an old long lost friend. Equally fine is The Last Word (hints of Blaze Foley?) and This Old Garage. The latter is one of many songs that feature some tasty work from Maines (a man who tends to lend his support to only good recordings, and rarely becomes as involved as he is here. I finest validation of his talent could not be asked for), on this occasion it is his slide guitar playing. With a bunch of catchy lyrics sewn into the fabric the track is a five star effort. Enjoy.
