The Felice Brothers "Celebration, Florida" (Loose 2011)

Kimmie Rhodes "Dreams of Flying" (Sunbird 2011)

Rodney Crowell knows a thing or two about writing a good tune I’m sure you’d agree, ”the soul of a poet and the voice of an angel” is the phrase he used to describe Kimmie Rhodes and it’s a more than apt summary, Kimmie’s songs have been recorded by names you can throw in without need of… Continue

Malcolm Holcombe "To Drink The Rain" (Music Road Records 2011)

This album feels so effortless, the skill of the performer using a musical sleight of hand that lulls the senses with the beauty of it’s simplicity, this is Holcombe’s eighth album and has been produced by long-time sideman Jared Tyler – they know each other well and To Drink The Rain reflects… Continue

Justin Rutledge “The Early Widows” (Six Shooter Records 2010)

With a growing number of albums hitting Beat Surrender's virtual doormat I've started to carry around with me more of the new music that gets sent my way, listening on the move is not always ideal so the music needs to quickly grab my attention, Justin Rutledge's latest album The Early Widows did just that and after the first listen I was immediately reaching for the repeat button.

The Early Widows is Toronto… Continue

Jeff Finlin “The Tao of Motor Oil” (Bent Wheel Songs 2010)

You don't put a Jeff Finlin album on as background music, you need to put any distractions to one-side, listen intently and absorb, it's worth it.

Despite the critical accolades and big-name endorsements (Springsteen's a fan) the man's music hasn't made it to the masses, it probably not much consolation to the guy but he's a firm… Continue

Townes - Covered and Covered Again

When the songs are that good it's no surprise that there is a pair of albums out in the next month or so featuring covers of the late, great Townes van Zandt work.

The first one is Riding the Range - The songs of Townes Van Zandt, there's an extra angle on this one as… Continue

Guthrie Kennard “Matchbox”

Got to be honest I had no idea who Guthrie Kennard was before reading the press-release to his latest album Matchbox, so I discover he's released several solo albums as well as playing bass for the legendary Ray Wylie Hubbard who produced this release - guaranteeing it's worth listening to.

The album's a fine set of Texas country-blues, solid earthy vocal, strong lyrics and a minimal production that lets the songs speak for themselves, excellent stuff, had to… Continue

Faith to Fall is the debut solo release from San Francisco based singer-songwriter-bassist Kate Burkart, eleven self-penned tracks exploring the eternal conundrums of love, faith and loss against a back drop of cultured and cosmopolitan musical styles, originally from Boston… Continue

Kingsley Flood "Dust Windows"

I'm trying to nail why I like this album, on first listen I didn't "get it", but was intrigued enough to go for round two immediately, then three and four, it's kind of addictive - the way it jumps around mixing up the styles maybe, the sharp sometimes off-kilter lyrics perhaps, whatever it is this Boston five-piece have produced a cracker of a début,… Continue

Exebelle & The Rusted Cavalcade "Vivement l'Automne!"

Back in November of last year I posted on Beat Surrender details of a couple of EP's released by Richmond VA band Exebelle & The Rusted Cavalcade and mentioned a third was in the works, well it's complete now, entitled Vivement l'Automne! it's a case of saving the best to last as this one is the strongest of the trio of EP's, seven tracks of first class Americana from a group of… Continue

“Face A Frowning World” - An E.C. Ball Memorial Album

When I got this album I must admit to mentally shelving it, for a start I had no idea who E.C. Ball was and the track listing pointed towards a gospel collection – which has never been near the top of my listening, but I’d also made myself a promise to listen to as much of the music I get sent as possible so I filed it in pending. A few weeks down the line I took to reading the “one sheet” for the album and the first thing I noticed was a number of… Continue

Willy Clay Band - Blue

Swedish country rockers Willy Clay Band have recently released their second album the follow up to the wonderful Rebecca Drive, there was an EP in between but this album is long overdue - but worthy of the wait, it's as good as album number one and features the same blend of crafted country roots rockers.

The Shants - Russian River Songs EP

Hailing from Oakland CA and describing their music as "slow southern folk" The Shants are - Skip Allums (guitars, vocals, piano), Samuel Tokheim (pedal steel) , Carver Cordes (bass) and Adam Burstein (drums) with Maggie Morris on harmony vocals.

The lead off track from their debut EP Russian River Songs sets the tone nicely and fits easily into the Americana genre, the mood created by the pedal steel and acoustic guitar set against the… Continue
