THE JOHN HARTFORD STRING BAND —MEMORIES OF JOHN (Compass Records)

www.compassrecords.com

Oh, how good it is to hear this tribute to John Hartford. Acoustic, stripped back and simple from the outset this is something he would be so proud of and righty so.

With his… Continue

CHATHAM COUNTY LINE —WILDWOOD (Yep Roc)

www.yeproc.com

Wildwood is the bands fifth album and with current members Dave Wilson, John Teer, Chandler Holt and Greg Readling at the helm and, like the previous recordings it is the business.

Combining bluegrass, country and rock the North Carolina band produce a dynamic mix of music that offers shades of varying degrees of the Old Crow Medicine Show and funny enough vocal harmonies… Continue

JUDY COLLINS —PARADISE (Wildflower Records)

www.wildflowerrecords.com

I am a long time fan of Judy Collins, forever taken by the purity of her crystal clear vocals, but Paradise on first listen came as a disappointment. Yet such is her performance with the help of contributions by Joan Baez, Stephen Stills and Michael Johnson the album makes the finishing line with an ease that only Collins and the like could manage.

With the cd… Continue

VARIOUS —I LIKE IT BETTER HERE – MUSIC FROM HOME (Hemifran)

www.hemifran.com

Put out by Hemifran this 17-track compilation has a wonderful array of talent on display, ranging from Jackson Browne to Keith Miles by way of the fabulous Joel Rafael and Jack Tempchin who are first and second in the running order and well worth the position.

Greg Copeland, Steve Noonan, Vince Melamed whom like Rafael and Tempchin help set the benchmark on this wonderful… Continue

MERLE HAGGARD —KERN RIVER / AMBER WAVES OF GRAIN (BGO)

www.bgo-records.com

When it comes to two-offers on BGO records those featuring the music of Merle Haggard are as good, if not better than any the label has on offer.

Born and raised in California, Haggard after years on Capitol moved on to MCA before settling for Sony and where this mid-1980s set hails. Kern River is an amazing selection of diverse songs. The title-cut ‘Kern River’ that speaks… Continue

TIM O’BRIEN —CHICKEN & EGG (Howdy Skies)

www.propermusic.com

Chicken & Eggs is yet another fine album from singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist all-round ace act Tim O’Brien. As he brings together a feast of flavours to the table to go with his inquisitive creative instinct he also has a bunch of good friends join him on a set of tunes that encompass folk, country, bluegrass and is enriched by a little rockabilly trucking… Continue

DALE WATSON —CARRYIN’ ON (Me & My Records)

When it comes to country music of the old school; I am talking Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Lefty Frizzell and Hank Williams and the likes… Continue
