Rounder Recording act Nanci Griffith is on the road again

Oh, how time flies since it is almost 25 years since Nanci Griffith first came over to the UK, and has been a regular visitor ever since. Her stubborn West Texas roots has seen to it that unlike some singer-songwriters and otherwise performers she has been a survivor, and despite changes in the music industry Griffith has rolled with the punches to the degree her latest album The Loving Kind has been acclaimed by many as her best album (her two Other Voices... recordings… Continue

STEVE COYLE —TEN IN ONE (Fiddling Cricket Music)

Former Waybacks leader and founder member, Stevie Coyle for his solo debut has come up with a unique and ambitious project, and it works. Ten In One is a collection of songs and accompanying intros that take the listener on journey through time, a time when carnivals, side shows, roustabouts and trains were a way of life for a great many. His ability to conjure, spare stark imagery aided by fine… Continue

LESLEE BOEHM —MY TURN (CD Baby; iTunes; digstation) Leslee Boehm is a new name to come on to the scene, and a fiddle player at that. Young Texan, Leslee Boehm may on occasions, vocally lean towards country music mainstream but she also possesses a wonderful touch with the bow and has a great love for western swing. Through the help of such stalwarts as, Rich O’Brien who plays with western singer-songwriter, storyteller Red… Continue

Oh, what a great voice this lady has! Not just because she sings good old-fashioned country music doused with bluegrass but enjoy herself doing so. After her first Mountain Soul album in 2001, I could hardly bide myself thinking had she plans to make a follow-up? In between it all Loveless released yet another treasure, Sleepless Nights. Made up… Continue

When it comes to country, bluegrass dashed with a little folk awash in vibrant qualities, then the Georgia-born and raised Lovell Sisters; Rebecca (mandolin, finger style, acoustic guitar, djembe and lead vocals), Megan (resophonic guitar, lap steel and vocals) and Jessica (fiddle, glockenspiel and lead vocals) aided by Matthew… Continue

RICKY SKAGGS —SOLO, SONGS MY DAD LOVED (Skaggs Family Records) with Video Interview

People have admired the versatility of Ricky Skaggs ever since he came to the fore in the 1970s. When he played with another precocious talent, the late Keith Whitley in Ralph Stanley’s Clinch Mountain Boys and J.D Crowe’s famed, New South then, as a multi-Grammy winning solo act. Not to forget, either, is his time with the Country Gentlemen, recordings with flat-picker, vocalist Tony Rice and… Continue

Fame came to James Hand late in life, but boy doesn’t he know how to sing old-fashioned brand of country music. Better than the fresh-faced new hyped acts and otherwise coming out of Nashville that is for sure, he is the real deal who can count among his fans such country music legends as Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson (‘you believe him’) and who am I to argue.

Like with his Rounder debut, The… Continue

Superb hooky rhythms and in general, lots happening with Jim Zhivago (who also produced the album), Blake Fleming and Rich Hinman in support to his own acoustic, electric guitar, banjo and harp —the music is tight and such is the energy and creative flare of Gripka there are no holes or lack of fullness. Israel’s music and vocals have some John Fogerty tendencies as he swamps the listener with the likes of ‘Pray For… Continue

At long last Dave Rawlings has decided to step out from the shadows of his partner, Gillian Welch, and as anticipated he brings a great deal to the table. A huge talent, Rawlings brings together the music of what you would expect from the Old Crow Medicine Show (with whom he has worked) and hints of The Band. Great stuff.

Entwined… Continue

KATE MacLEOD —BLOOMING - Waterbug (media)

Americana singer-songwriter Kate MacLeod makes interesting music, a finely spun mix of folk and country music tinged with hints of pop, and when she kicks off her shoes to rattle along at a quicker tempo she is of another class. That isn’t to say her more studious, inner looking songs aren’t good. They are. But it is on the songs possessing a greater feel of freedom and free abandon that Kate instantly appeals.… Continue

THE PINES —TREMELO - Red House (media)

The Pines are two young Iowa musicians. Benson Ramsey, son of musician, songwriter-recording act, producer Bo Ramsey and David Huckfelt are supported on Tremelo by their Minneapolis-based all-star band of J.T Bates (drums), James Buckley (bass) and Alex Ramsey (keyboards), plus you have Bo Ramsey co-produce (with them) and play… Continue
