John (Biscuits and Gravy) Davy's Blog – April 2010 Archive (5)

Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit (Album of the same name)

www.jasonisbell.comI've had this album kicking around a few weeks now, and it just keeps finding its way back on to the player. It was actually released in 2009, so I'm behind the times on this one, but they're playing in Kilkenny next weekend and if I could be there I would.

Jason Isbell was in the Drive-by Truckers for some years, and you can hear that in the sound of this new… Continue

Viper Central: The Devil Sure Is Hard To Please

http://www.vipercentral.ca/

Well, I hadn't been listening to bluegrass/Appalachian music much recently but then, in the course of a few weeks, along come two albums to really freshen the appetite. First there was the Carolina Chocolate Drops and now there's Vancouver's Viper Central. Silly name, I know, but I believe they claim they were drunk at the time.

http://thetexastornados.com/

Short history lesson for those, like me, who know nada of the Tornados. The star names… Continue

Grant Peeples: Pawnshop

www.grantpeeples.com

This man's a born writer, it just seems it took a while for him to get the bit between his teeth. According to the potted autobiography he's got up on his website, which I'm prepared to take pretty much at face value despite the poetic sweep of his tale, it was a friends rendition of Bob Dylan songs that turned him onto the possibilities of songwriting. Many years of playing around… Continue

Sally Spring: Made of Stars (Siffinpup Records)

www.sallyspring.com

Anybody who knows and loves Sally Spring’s music will welcome the opening bars of Beautiful Ride, the opening track on this new album, like an old friend. If you don’t know her music, I’ll tell you that from the first bar you’re dropped gently into the warm sound of her band – a balanced sound, built around Rich Feridun’s eloquent acoustic guitar – and then Sally’s voice comes in, a rich… Continue
