THE REVEREND SHAWN AMOS – Kitchen Table Blues Vol. 1 (Put Together Music)

Now this is a nice idea, and one that translates rather nicely to disc. Bluesman Reverend Shawn Amos manages to keep one foot firmly in the blues tradition whilst the other wanders… wherever. So it is that this five track CD EP contain material he recorded for his informal Sunday morning sessions on Youtube, with…

TIFFANY POLLACK & ERIC JOHANSEN – Blues In My Blood (Nola Blue NB 008)

This is a duo out of New Orleans, with Tiffany a noted jazz singer (though you might not guess that from some of the tough performances here) and Eric formerly lead guitarist for Cyrille Neville of The Neville Brothers and zydeco artist Terrance Simien, and they are backed by some top-notch musicians.…

BENNY TURNER AND CASH McCALL – Going Back Home (Nola Blue NB 007)

Two blues veterans get together here; Benny, born in 1939, was bass player for his brother, the illustrious Freddy King, and these days he makes excellent blues albums himself. Singer and guitarist Cash McCall – aka Morris Dollison Jr. – had an R’n’B hit back in 1966 and worked…

Vin Mott – Rogue Hunter (Independent)

Young Vin Mott plays a mean blues harp and sings with a warm and enthusiastic voice on this album, his follow-up to his 2017 debut set, “Quit The Women For The Blues”. He has some good material too, and, with an insight rare in the blues these days, he writes in the CD…

TREVOR B. POWER BAND - Everyday Angel (Independent)

Singer, guitarist and bandleader Trevor is from New Jersey; he received his first guitar for his fifteenth birthday, but only turned to the blues much later when he met Bobby Whitlock (keyboards player with Derek & The Dominoes, and much else, including being the…

Dee Miller Band - Leopard Print Dress (Independent)

Dee has been called “The Duchess Of The Blues” in her native Minneapolis, and here she lives up to that title with a strong, powerful and energetic set of gritty blues and soul. Etta James is obviously a strong influence, as can be heard not only on the sixties rhythm and…

David Bromberg – The Player: A Retrospective (Floating World FLOATM6382)

Born in Philadelphia, PA in 1945, David Bromberg took up the guitar at the age of 13 and quickly became enamoured of the folk and blues revival scene, taking lessons from no less than Reverend Gary Davis in Greenwich Village in the 60s. He eagerly soaked up blues (acoustic…

Paul Nelson – Over Under Through (Riverwide)

Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Paul Nelson, from New Hampshire, has an eclectic approach on this often moody sounding CD, drawing in country, blues, Americana and roots-rock, as much JJ Cale as it is Tom Waits, and he even throws in a slow-tempo'ed cover of Johnny Cash’s ‘I Walk The Line’ for (very)…

WILLA VINCITORE – Choices (Building Records)

This is the second album from the Hudson Valley, New York State based singer Willa Vincitore, the follow-up to her well-received debut, Better Days, in 2017. The throbbing opener ‘Just Ain’t The Same’ is a reminder of just what a fine vocalist she is – there’s a little bit of a Tina Turner styled approach to her sound here – but then…

DIANE DURRETT & SOUL SUGA – Live (Independent –

Diane Durrett | Diane Durrett & Soul Suga Live

www.dianedurrett.com)

“Ain’t nobody gone blind looking at the bright side” sings Diane on the opening number here, a fine example of the positive nature of soul music, and there’s no doubt that’s what is on offer here. Recorded over two show s at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, Georgia in July 2017, this CD presents singer and guitarist Diane backed by a tight six piece band including two…

DAVID LUMSDEN AND FRIENDS – Hues Of Blues (Independent Release)

David was the lead guitarist for vocalist Hurricane Ruth from 2011 to 2017, but here he steps out under his own name, though with the support of a memorable group of “friends”. His buddies include the excellent singer and pianist Wayne Carter (lend an ear to his rendition of Denise LaSalle’s ‘You’re Ruining My Bad Reputation’, with David’s…

DAVE KELLER – Every Soul’s A Star (Catfood)

This is the label debut for this talented singer/ guitarist/ songwriter, originally from New England. Dave thanks label mate and frequent touring companion Johnny Rawls on the sleeve, and that’s as it should be. Dave has obviously learned a lot from the older man, not least how to make very impressive…

PETER V BLUES TRAIN – Shaken But Not Deterred (Independent)

Peter V Blues Train | Shaken but Not Deterred

Singer, guitarist and bandleader Peter Veteska was born in Manhattan in 1959 and started playing guitar round the age of 12, learning through listening to the likes of Derek & The Dominoes and The Allman Brothers. Almost a decade later, he packed up playing and only returned to it after a quarter of a century had elapsed. As he puts it, “I was the new kid on the block yet I was in my…

SANDY CARROLL – Blues & Angels (Catfood CFR-027)

From Memphis, Tennessee, singer, keyboards player and songwriter Sandy’s previous albums have focussed on Americana and country music, but now she returns to the blues – and, given the lyrics of many songs – Angels. There are still elements of Americana – try the heartfelt love song ‘Mississippi Me’, with…

DELTA MOON – Babylon Is Falling (Jumping Jack 12018)

This band is a nice swampy rock and blues outfit out of Atlanta, Georgia, with a sometimes spooky sound. This is their tenth studio album, and uniquely southern tracks such as ‘Babylon Is Falling’ and ‘Little Pink Pistol’ feature some fine slide guitar work…

JOE LOUIS WALKER, BRUCE KATZ & GILES ROBSON – Journeys To the Heart Of The Blues (Alligator/ Munich)

Just a few seconds into the opening tracks of this CD, and UK harmonica ace Giles Robson has already supplied some lovely train licks, pianist Bruce Katz (check out his CV!) is playing beautifully controlled boogie-woogie, and the great Joe Louis Walker is singing and…

Frank Bey – Back In Business: The Nashville Sessions (NOLA Blue NB006)

Back in Business

Georgia-born Frank is one of the best blues and soul singers around these days, having started out as a teenager as driver and sometimes  opening act for Otis Redding for several years (billed as "Frank Bass")– his roots are obviously in the gospel music he sang as a youngster. He stopped singing for 17 years, but the albums he has made since his comeback have all justifiably been highly praised.…

SCOTT SHARRARD – Saving Grace (We Save Music)

Recorded in Memphis and Muscle Shoals with the Hi Records rhythm section and the likes of David Hood and Spooner Oldham respectively, it would be difficult not to recommend this CD. Let’s mention too that Scott was Gregg Allman’s musical director for nearly ten…
