AJ DOWNING —GOOD DAY (Self-Released)

Good Day is AJ Downing’s third album and what a fine one it is. Downing’s music isn’t too far away from that of Jack Ingram, hearty, gritty and it has a swagger. An observational writer like Ingram plus, he has lived quite a bit. For AJ has spent time living in California, Michigan and Nashville. He has played the Bluebird Café a time or two, met in 1989 (he was just 19 at the time) Steve Earle…

Unrelenting, raw-boned, full of thrusting surges of powerful playing and impassioned vocals The Shovel (vs) The Howling Bones is a chip off the old block. The block I am talking about is the young Lincoln Durham’s mentor, Texas-based singer-songwriter, producer and recording act Ray Wylie Hubbard. And, to cap it all…

Few country legends have shown such vitality and enthusiasm for their music as Bakersfield’s Buck Owens (1929-2006); best known by some for his huge hit ‘Act Naturally’ and when in 1986 he came out of retirement to record a remake of ‘Streets Of Bakersfield’ with then New Traditionalist Dwight Yoakam as he rolled back the years!

Country fans will of course also have fond memories…

In keeping to the age-old style and tight as a drum vocal harmonies the trio of Sean Cooney (songwriter), David Eagle (keyboards, piano accordion) and Michael (guitar) simultaneously bring to the table a feeling…

Awna Teixeira: Where The Darkness Goes (and album launch tour dates)

As debut solo albums go, this one was some while in the appearing, being delayed by Awna’s seven-year (to date) musical adventures with Po’Girl. However, determinedly taking the time out this spring, she gathered a host of Chicago musicians to produce this happy meander through all the avenues of her musical life. With a huge and…

The Mountain Firework Company: The Lonesome Losing Blues

That year end top ten list is filling up nicely, and here’s another British contender that I’m sure will be on it. Brighton-based, The Mountain Firework Company do as fine a job as anyone (either side of the Atlantic) in taking that bluegrass sound and making it totally relevant for the early…
