SAMMY EUBANKS – Sugar Me (Underworld Records UND0026)

Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, this is singer/ guitarist/ bandleader Sammy’s fifth album. There is a definite Delbert McClinton feel to the opener, ‘It’s All Blues To Me’, with a slight country tinge to Sammy’s vocal; the same comments can be applied to the self-penned title…

MARKEY BLUE – The Blues Are Knockin’ (SoulOSound Records)

This is a very classy, straightforward blues set from this Nashville-based outfit. Guitarist Ric Latina – a veteran of many country and blues groups and sessions – teamed up with singer Jeannette Markey in 2012, initially just to write a few songs. This is their second album and for blues lovers, it really hits the spot. As I write this, I am listening to ‘Be My Train’, a fine, funky Little Milton tribute (incidentally all ten songs here are originals),…

The California Feetwarmers on tour

MASTERS of ragtime, Dixieland blues and early swing, The California Feetwarmers are renowned for an earthy depth of character that sets them apart from others who have followed that throwback path to New Orleans, Circa 1920.

Their boisterous on-stage antics are solidly underpinned by playing that is as close to the source as it can…

DEBBIE BOND – Enjoy The Ride (Blues Root Productions BRP1601)

Singer and nicely economical guitarist Debbie Bond is a champion for the blues of her Alabama home, having spent many years working with the likes of Johnny Shines (who settled there eventually), Eddie Kirkland and Alabama backwoods blues legend Willie King. On this, her fourth studio album, she covers songs from the last two just named, with Kirkland’s ‘Rainbow’ a moody, minor key blues, and King’s vaguely Latin tinged Howling Wolf influenced number both…
