Rounder Recording act Nanci Griffith is on the road again

Oh, how time flies since it is almost 25 years since Nanci Griffith first came over to the UK, and has been a regular visitor ever since. Her stubborn West Texas roots has seen to it that unlike some singer-songwriters and otherwise performers she has been a survivor, and despite changes in the music industry Griffith has rolled with the punches to the degree her latest album The Loving Kind has been acclaimed by many as her best album (her two Other Voices... recordings… Continue

Review: Various Artists - "Por Vida, A Tribute to the Songs of Alejandro Escovedo" (Cooking Vinyl 2004)

First point - the songs of Alejandro Escovedo have a peculiarity (ok, they have many, but one stands out among the other): the gift to sound immediately as the most original among the possible interpretations. It is not something so obvious; there’s plenty of great songwriters we can’t tell the same about. Instead the songs of Alejandro seem almost impossible to renew, unless we denaturalize them completely. After all, how many authors can boast the privilege to have drawn a form of… Continue

Marcus Bonfanti -- What Good Am I To You? (The Guitar Label)

This is 27 year old Londoner Bonfanti’s second album and follows on from 2008s promising debut, Hard Times. That debut gave rise to a new British voice demanding to be heard and the follow up confirms that the voice has arrived. Bonfanti was once described as the love child of Tom Waits and Van Morrison and also the person to fill the gap between Seasick Steve and Jack Johnson. Time will tell (not on the love child thing though!) The grinding… Continue

Hailing from Oakland CA and describing their music as "slow southern folk" The Shants are - Skip Allums (guitars, vocals, piano), Samuel Tokheim (pedal steel) , Carver Cordes (bass) and Adam Burstein (drums) with Maggie Morris on harmony vocals.

The lead off track from their debut EP Russian River Songs sets the tone nicely and fits easily into the Americana genre, the mood created by the pedal steel and acoustic guitar set against the… Continue

Malcolm Holcombe in Concert and Conversation at The Coffee Shop Strathpeffer 21st January

The incomparable Malcolm Holcombe in Concert and Conversation at The Coffee Shop Strathpeffer 21st January

Sure. There are the inevitable comparisons to Tom Waits, but that's mostly due to Malcolm Holcombe's dark blue minstrelsy, delivered in a burned up voice. I'd add Malcolm has the presence and pertinence of a deconstructed John Prine, but truth be told Malcolm is a one off mound breaker of a… Continue

Luther Allison -- Songs From The Road (Ruf Records)

It’s hard to believe that Luther Allison died over 12 years ago as I remember reviewing him just around the day he died. This latest set, recorded for Canadian Television just 4 days before he had to cancel his tour in 1997 and never to return to the stage again, runs for 90 minutes on CD and 56 minutes on DVD. Cancel My Check has a long guitar intro that sets the scene. Luther then adds his dulcet tones to his outstanding guitar for a storming start… Continue

Tom Russell - Live at Southport

I’m thinking of starting a sub series of blogs: “Glorious artists in incongruous settings”. Until Tuesday night Steve Earle in the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester ( more suited to Manchester ‘s Symphony orchestra ) would have been high up that list, possibly top, closely followed by Chatham County Line playing at St Bede’s in Chorley, which looks to be a typical working men’s club, and more suited to - well, anyone who might play a WMC. But last Tuesday I saw Tom Russell, in Fleetwood and Hesketh… Continue

STEVE COYLE —TEN IN ONE (Fiddling Cricket Music)

www.steviecoyle.com

Former Waybacks leader and founder member, Stevie Coyle for his solo debut has come up with a unique and ambitious project, and it works. Ten In One is a collection of songs and accompanying intros that take the listener on journey through time, a time when carnivals, side shows, roustabouts and trains were a way of life for a great many. His ability to conjure, spare stark imagery aided by fine… Continue

Review: Luther Dickinson & The Sons of Mudboy - "Onward and Upward"

Instrumentist for Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones and Flamin Groovies. Producer of Green On Red, Replacements<, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Willy DeVille, Mudhoney and Tav Falco.

Leader of Mudboy & The Neutrons, a grungy swill of swamp-blues, country and rock and roll, little documented on record but surely listened for a long time by a lot of bands of the south of the United States.

This is only a little part of the Jim Dickinson’s resume. An… Continue
